Saliva y Reparación Tisular: Un Natural e Inexplorado Universo Terapéutico

Numerosas sustancias y actividades de la vida diaria representan un riesgo potencial de agresión para los tejidos de la cavidad bucal. Sin embargo, los tejidos bucales manifiestan una asombrosa capacidad de resiliencia y recuperación gracias, en gran medida, a la saliva, fluido producido por la acción conjunta de las glándulas salivales mayores y menores. A través de diversos estudios desarrollados a lo largo de los años, una gran cantidad de componentes activos, como los factores de crecimiento EGF, TGF-α, NGF, VEGF, entre otros, y sustancias como histatinas, parotina y factor tisular, han sido identificados en la saliva, exhibiendo funciones específicas sobre la reparación tisular. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo proporcionar una versión actualizada de la participación de las glándulas salivales y sus componentes de secreción en la reparación tisular y resaltar su influencia en el manejo clínico de lesiones bucales. Una amplia revisión de la bibliografía fue llevada a cabo con el fin de realizar un compilado de los elementos constituyentes de la saliva que, de acuerdo al conocimiento actual, poseen efectos directos o indirectos demostrados sobre los mecanismos de curación y mantenimiento de la salud de los tejidos bucales.
